Phone Configuration¶
These settings ensure the server phone runs reliably without interruption. A server phone must keep TeleTalk running in the background 24/7, so the default power-saving behavior of Android needs to be adjusted.
Disable Battery Optimization¶
Android aggressively puts background apps to sleep to save battery. This must be disabled for TeleTalk on a server phone.
- Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Optimization (path may vary by manufacturer).
- Find TeleTalk in the list.
- Select Don't optimize or Unrestricted.
Samsung Devices
Go to Settings > Battery > Background usage limits and add TeleTalk to the "Never sleeping apps" list.
Xiaomi / MIUI Devices
Go to Settings > Battery & Performance > App battery saver, find TeleTalk, and set it to No restrictions.
Enable Auto-Start¶
On some manufacturers (Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo), apps must be explicitly allowed to auto-start after a reboot.
- Go to Settings > Apps > TeleTalk > Permissions (or Settings > Apps > Manage Apps > TeleTalk).
- Enable Auto-start or Auto-launch.
Info
This setting is not available on stock Android or Samsung devices — they handle auto-start differently and typically do not require this step.
Keep the Screen On (Optional)¶
If you want the phone to display live status information:
- Go to Settings > Developer Options.
- Enable Stay awake (screen stays on while charging).
How to enable Developer Options
If Developer Options is not visible in Settings:
- Go to Settings > About Phone.
- Tap Build Number seven times.
- You will see a toast message: "You are now a developer!"
- Developer Options will now appear under Settings > System > Developer Options (or directly under Settings).
Set Screen Timeout (If Not Using Stay Awake)¶
If you prefer the screen to turn off but want a longer timeout:
- Go to Settings > Display > Screen Timeout.
- Set it to the maximum value available (e.g., 30 minutes).
Note
The screen turning off does not affect TeleTalk's background operation as long as battery optimization is disabled.
Connect to Power¶
Plug the server phone into a reliable power source. The phone must remain charged and powered on at all times.
Warning
If the server phone loses power or shuts down, data synchronization at the station will be interrupted until it is restarted.
Recommendations:
- Use a high-quality charging cable and adapter (at least 2A output).
- If power outages are common, consider connecting through a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) or a small power bank.
- Avoid using damaged or frayed cables — they can cause intermittent charging and unexpected shutdowns.
Disable Software Updates (Recommended)¶
Automatic system updates can restart the phone unexpectedly.
- Go to Settings > System > Software Update (or Settings > About Phone > Software Update).
- Disable Auto-download over Wi-Fi and Auto-install.
Tip
Schedule manual updates during planned maintenance windows instead of allowing automatic updates.
Summary Checklist¶
Use this checklist to verify all configuration steps are complete:
- [ ] Battery optimization disabled for TeleTalk
- [ ] Auto-start enabled (if applicable to the device manufacturer)
- [ ] Stay awake enabled or screen timeout extended
- [ ] Phone connected to a reliable power source
- [ ] Automatic software updates disabled
Next Steps¶
Once the phone is configured, proceed to Network Setup to ensure reliable internet connectivity.
